Hanoi Free Walking Tours
Today I had the pleasure of meeting Thang who met me at my hotel to take me on a tour of some areas of Hanoi. Having arrived in Hanoi last evening, this was my first full day in Hanoi and I was looking to get a lay of the land and get my bearings in this city.

First off, I was surprised that it was only Thang and I on the tour. I was expecting a group of people but never expected to have a tour guide all to myself - and a free one at that.

Today's tour was Thang's second time guiding a tour on his own. He did a great job. He was in communication with his tour club when he didn't know the answer to something (like my request to enjoy a cup of coffee together). He took me to this most interesting and hidden coffee shop (through the inside alley of a shop, up a flight of stairs but the place was packed so we didn't stay).

Thang's English is very good but what really impressed me was his Japanese! Not just his affinity for languages but the fact that he was inquisitive about my country and in all honestly he knew facts about my home country that I am embarrassed to say I didn't even know. He came across as being very bright.

Thang is very personable. He has a good sense of humour and he is really just a delightful young man. I never expected this level of professionalism and enjoyment.

We toured around the old quarter and walked across the Chuong Duang Bridge (that was very interesting in and of itself). We visited the Prison Museum, the large market and enjoyed Hoan Kiem Lake, to name a few of the interesting things we did and saw.

Admittedly, I had tried to reserve a different free tour company weeks ago but they were booked up. I posed the question on Trip Advisor asking for other alternatives which is how I found out about Hanoi Free Local Tours. I'm really glad I spent the day with Thang and am glad the University students offer such an impressive free guided tour.

Thank you Thang! I wish you immense success with your education and career goals.
This is a first rate set up. Pre-tour organisation was efficient and being met at one's hotel a real bonus, considering we arrived late the night before.
Our brilliant guide Dung started by teaching us to cross the road like a local - a skill that you have to master quickly in this city of mopeds.
The 3 hour tour went incredibly fast - we visited the prison Maison Centrale/Women's museum/Lake/St Joseph's.
The most interesting part is learning about learning life as a young person growing up in Vietnam.
Dung's English was excellent and we were very sorry to part company after learning so much in 3 short hours. Don't miss out on this mutually beneficial tour experience!

* The second Hanoi free tour closed with my hope and happiness. Although guiding how many tours, I have never forgot this lovely couple. From starting picking tourists up at their hotel, I had some troubles. how ashamed! I had to hold a piece of paper with their names and went around hotel to find them. Luckily, I had just showed the paper the old woman sitting on a chair called me and led me to find her husband being absorbed in taking a lot of photographs. He really loves photographing and he kelp camera during doing sightseeing. So sometimes I nearly strayed him among the crowed people in Tet holiday. Keren always raised her hand and said "Phillip! Come on" Hahahah. He again told "Sorry" and kept up with us. What a lovely man! We talked and shared many things with each other happily during walking. Although they are nearly 60 years old, they have run a business and traveled more 25 countries on the world. They also gave me their business card and welcomed me to visit their country. Ah! their son had intention to get married next month. Congratulation! Moreover, they taught me many things and asked innumerable ones. Specially, they always listened to me when I talked although I pronounced incorrectly and couraged me to keep the young's enthusiasm and the inquiring mind. Karen is an emotional person. When visiting Hoa Lo prison, she cried and asked me " Why Vietnam could forgive the crimes the French caused" Oh! How I could explain for her. At the end of tour, they invited me to have a lunch at luxury hotel. I had a good time with them and I hope them too.
P/S: Have a good trip and Happy new year everybody.

This family came from Japan, their father worked in VN 8 years ago and also was a friend of Thao's cousin. They came back to VN to visit their old friends and Viet Nam. Unfortunately, only his son could speak English,we shared with him about some information and then he translated to his family. Sometimes he went away, so it was really difficult for us to connect and say with them.

This is the first time i have guided the Japanese tourists and also the first tour to Bat Trang. However it was great and super cute.
I didn't need to talk much because their English were not good so it was hard for me to chat with them at the start. When we came to Bat Trang, we spent the whole time in Ceramic market. They bought a lot and laughed a lot and overreacted because those things were much cheaper than in Japan. And they seemed to be super happy. The total stuffs were more than 3 million Vietnam dong and helped them get a good deal.
This made the seller happy so she invited us to try Banh Ngo (funny) but we refused. Then we went back to Hanoi and they wanted to try local food so i guided them to Net Hue, they tried a lot and complimented.
In the end they intended to give me tips but i refused because i just went shopping with them, no more, no less.
The girls were super cute, nice and shopaholics,

This Hanoi free Tour was cool. They were friendly and they said they loved Vietnamese food so much that made me happy and proud.
I guided them around the Lake and they seemed to be interested in it. They asked me a lot. Then we talked about the religion and turned out that almost people in Philip follow Christianity. And the tourists were quite surprised that 80% population of Vietnam have no religion and they said that was great.

Hanoi Free Tours Report 26/12/2016.
* Time: 4pm-9pm 26/12/2016.
* Tourist: Alexandra and Simon
* Tour Guides: Thạch Thảo, Hương
* Destinations: Old quarters, Hoan kiem lake, Le Loi temple, cathedral, Cafe Dinh, Sticky rice for dinner.
We started at post office. First, we visit Le Loi temple and walk around Hk lake. We talk about the life after the dead at temple so that was kind of interesting experience from my point of view. In addition, we told them the legend of the lake, The Huc bridge and also Ngoc Son temple. Then we reached the Cathedral for a moment and talk a little bit about religion in Canada. Then we had egg coffee at Dinh cafe. They was so exciting because the cafe was kind of secret and ancient orientation in Hanoi and they fell in love with egg coffee after one single taste. Last but not least, we bought xôi khúc and bring them to Circle-K to eat, and also bought Thailand green tea for drink. They love Thailand green tea.
Finally when we reached their hostel, they show their appreciation and gave us 400k, 200k for each, we denied to recieve, so they give us coins of Egypt as a souvenir. Personally, I really love that souvenir and I feel so happy when I can keep a coin that come from Egypt.
To sum up, they were so nice, we have shared a lot of things, I have learnt many new things today. Thank all <3
