Hanoi Free Walking Tours
Today I had the pleasure of meeting Thang who met me at my hotel to take me on a tour of some areas of Hanoi. Having arrived in Hanoi last evening, this was my first full day in Hanoi and I was looking to get a lay of the land and get my bearings in this city.

First off, I was surprised that it was only Thang and I on the tour. I was expecting a group of people but never expected to have a tour guide all to myself - and a free one at that.

Today's tour was Thang's second time guiding a tour on his own. He did a great job. He was in communication with his tour club when he didn't know the answer to something (like my request to enjoy a cup of coffee together). He took me to this most interesting and hidden coffee shop (through the inside alley of a shop, up a flight of stairs but the place was packed so we didn't stay).

Thang's English is very good but what really impressed me was his Japanese! Not just his affinity for languages but the fact that he was inquisitive about my country and in all honestly he knew facts about my home country that I am embarrassed to say I didn't even know. He came across as being very bright.

Thang is very personable. He has a good sense of humour and he is really just a delightful young man. I never expected this level of professionalism and enjoyment.

We toured around the old quarter and walked across the Chuong Duang Bridge (that was very interesting in and of itself). We visited the Prison Museum, the large market and enjoyed Hoan Kiem Lake, to name a few of the interesting things we did and saw.

Admittedly, I had tried to reserve a different free tour company weeks ago but they were booked up. I posed the question on Trip Advisor asking for other alternatives which is how I found out about Hanoi Free Local Tours. I'm really glad I spent the day with Thang and am glad the University students offer such an impressive free guided tour.

Thank you Thang! I wish you immense success with your education and career goals.
This is a first rate set up. Pre-tour organisation was efficient and being met at one's hotel a real bonus, considering we arrived late the night before.
Our brilliant guide Dung started by teaching us to cross the road like a local - a skill that you have to master quickly in this city of mopeds.
The 3 hour tour went incredibly fast - we visited the prison Maison Centrale/Women's museum/Lake/St Joseph's.
The most interesting part is learning about learning life as a young person growing up in Vietnam.
Dung's English was excellent and we were very sorry to part company after learning so much in 3 short hours. Don't miss out on this mutually beneficial tour experience!
